The Summit of the Oral Cholera Vaccine (OCV) Campaign
His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde E.D Mnangagwa continues to lead the nation by example in stamping out the ongoing cholera outbreak. The President halted the session of cabinet this Tuesday 16 October 2018 to allow the vaccination team led by the Honourable Minister of Health and Child Care Dr Obadiah Moyo and the Director of Epidemiology and Disease Control Dr. Portia Mnangazira.
The President was vaccinated by the Minister of Health and Child Care after which the Chief Secretary and all Cabinet members present were vaccinated by the Principal Nursing Officer of the City of Harare Health Services Ms Phillomina Chitando and her team, the EPI Program Officer Ms Pauline Chigodo and Mr Kenneth Chindedza of the World Health Organisation.
This vaccination follows, closely after 435 Parliamentarians and staff were vaccinated on 10 October 2018. The OCV program was launched on 3 October 2018 by the Honourable Minister of Health and Child Care at Budiriro Community Centre. The week long campaign (3-11 October 2018) saw 403 167 out of the targeted 422 722 residents of Mbare, Budiriro, Glen View and Glen Norah being vaccinated. Budiriro and Glen View which started on a slow pace managed to achieve 75% and 91% respectively bringing the national average coverage to 95%.
Following successful completion of the Harare Campaign, Epworth started vaccination on 15 October to 21 October 2018 targeting 170 00 residents, while Chitungwiza will commence their campaign on 17 October 2018 targeting 200 000 residents.
