Honourable Vice President and Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr Constantino Chiwenga during his tour of United Bulawayo Hospitals has set the tone for improving the conditions of service for health workers which include accommodation and transport as the most important things with the salary component capping it all.
“First and foremost, we are concerned with the conditions of service for our health workers and those we have given them greater attention.
I have always said salaries yes, but they are not the solutions to the conditions of service we are talking about, salaries will come at the tail end,” said Dr. Chiwenga.
The Minister of Health said health workers should have accommodation, meals at subsidised rates and their salaries should be a bonus after all their needs have been taken care of under conditions of service.
“What we want to see is accommodation for the health workers, transport and when they are at work they have a cafeteria where they can have a cup of tea or coffee and order their lunch and have their dinner at subsidised rates.
“Then the bonus will be what they will put in their pockets,” said VP Chiwenga.
In order to cushion health workers from the ever-rising and punitive rentals, Dr Chiwenga pointed out that the thrust was to avail accommodation for the workers.
“So we want to look at those issues. You will agree with me that the issue of accommodation is now central to the conditions of service, we want to have accommodation in all our health institutions,” said Dr. Chiwenga.
VP Chiwenga was accompanied by Minister of State for Bulawayo Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Judith Ncube, Minister of Local Government and Public Works, July Moyo, Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Vangelis Haritatos and other senior Government officials.
