Zimbabwe commemorates Kidney Day

Every second Thursday of March the world celebrates World Kidney Day and this year’s theme is ‘Kidney disease and obesity’.

Zimbabwe records 1 000 cases of kidney failure every year with only 700 accessing dialysis as a number of people cannot afford the lifesaving services. Kidney diseases are chronic and non-communicable. Kidney disease is also a silent killer, which largely affect the quality of life. About half of people who have diabetes develop kidney damage. THE QUALITY ASSURANCE AND QUALITY IMPROVEMENT POLICY AND STRATEGY

The Ministry of Health and Child Care established a Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement (QA/QI) Directorate under the division of Policy, Planning and Monitoring and Evaluation in 2010. Its mandate was to create a system for coordinating all health care related quality efforts under the ministry. This would include, creating platforms to ensure adherence to ministry standards where they are available, facilitating the development of standards where they were not available, as well as developing guidelines on how service delivery can be of the highest possible standards. This is in an effort to ensure that healthcare delivery not only meets, but exceeds the professional standards and client expectations.
